The UCU netball team won a crucial second-round match against Police with a stunning margin of 11 points. This was during the Uganda Volleyball Federation league game played at Nakivubo Stadium on October 5.
The team might just be suited for the playoffs and the East African Championships due in April next year in Uganda, if only they win three of the remaining six games. “Winning is a full-time dedication backed by prior preparation and high sense of team work and that aided us to win since we desperately needed it,” said netball captain Joan Ameyo. The team had a painful one-point loss at UCU against Police in the first round and this they said had been caused by the poor start. They revamped their play this time and dominated the whole game. They led the first quarter with a margin of six points then stretched the lead to seven points in the second and third quarters and eventually an eleven point edge of 51-40. The table standings show National Insurance Company is leading, followed by Prisons, Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) while UCU closes the play off slot. When the team hosts the UCU Open Netball Tournament early next month, they will fight to defend the championship, having beaten Kampala University in extra-time last time. “We look forward to retaining the championship since we have all it takes,” said netball coach Nelson Bogere. |
