The music turned down, the lights became brighter. Shortly, the game between the Canons and the defending champions Demark Power was flagged off. The second leg league game was played at the YMCA, Wandegeya in Kampala on September 25.
Prior to the game, the Canons had put their energies together and seemed ready to wrestle down the defending champions Power, the unlikely happened as they were shut on 70-75. “We had a wonderful start but lacked a proper finishing. We led the three and a half quarters of the game but anxiety overwhelmed us and that’s how we lost it,” said coach of the Canons Nicholas Natuhereza. Some of the fans shifted the blame on the guards saying they failed to control the game and ended up making desperate shots which never yielded. “We need to avoid the last minute panic; there were so many turn-overs as a result of poorly administered passes, screens and self composure which Power capitalised on to take the game,” said forward player Moses Ebwonu. The Canons enjoyed a 15-point lead of 24-9 during first half with Sunday Okot dominating the score with five, three-pointer shots. The second quarter brought the score to 27-39 before Power cut the lead to ten points at the end of third quarter. Three minutes to the end of the game, the score was 67-ups. The Canons’ tattered defence cost them in the last few seconds when Isaac Lugudde made a three pointer shot that edged Power who won the game on 70-75. “We made desperate attempts that virtually worked against us. But I am still optimistic that we will make it for the play-offs and might even win this years’ championship,” said Natuhereza. |
