The Doves were crowned champions and runners-up in the institutions and club categories after beating Nkumba 2-0 and losing the finals to Sport S 0-2 during the UCU Volleyball Open Tournament.  The two-day event was played at the UCU sports complex on October 1 and 2.

The seventh meet attracted 14 men’s and 6 women’s teams in the club category, while, institutions exhibited a low turn up with eight men’s and five women’s teams. The women’s institution category was played on a round robin series with Ndejje University leading the pack with a clean sheet, then Nkumba, UCU Doves, Kyambogo and Mulago School of Nursing.
Doves men were outstanding in the group stages of the institution’s category ahead of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, St. Lawrence University and Islamic University in Uganda. While pool B saw Nkumba, Ndejje, Kyambogo and Kampala University follow each other respectively. The Doves played Ndejje in the semis who succumbed a 2-0 loss, before a clash with Nkumba to clump then 2-0 in the finals to claim the institutions championship.
The ladies side seems to have been seized after the departure of front court attacker Irene Adeke and setter Olive Aryemo who were impactful talents.
The team was uncoordinated during the tournament to emerge fourth behind Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC), Nkumba University, and Ndejje University respectively.
Individual effort was awarded and Tom Amou of Doves and Dickens Otim of Nkumba were named MVPs in the men’s clubs and institutions respectively. On the women’s side, Brenda - Ndejje and Prossy Alobo- Nkumba were crowned in the institutions and clubs respectively.
“We have registered a great success though the games ended late compared to the previous tournaments,” said Cornelius Engwenyu who doubles as sports administrator and secretary of Uganda Volleyball Federation.
