The UCU guild held a sports day, on Saturday November 19, at the new football pitch. The event organised under the theme Promoting talent though sports attracted a great crowd, both participants and cheer leaders with an exemption of the university athletics team.
The event saw students compete in different categories of field and track: marathon, javelin, discus, shot put, 4x100m and 4x400m relays, 1500, 100, 300 and 200 metres among others. The afternoon downpour that soaked the tracks did not derail the participants from showcasing their sports talent. The crowd beamed when Ceaser Mboyo ran the 100 m race in 00:11:47, 00:1:89 seconds behind Ussein Bolt’s 00:09:58 world record. The top three participants in every category were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals and all participants received t-shirts. Stephen Gbongale and Alice Etto scooped the highest number of gold medals with 4 and 5 gold medals respectively. Brenda Mbone, an Assistant Tutor and also an official at the event said they were faced with a challenge of time following the heavy downpour. “We had an issue with time because of the rain, and the tracks were muddy,” said Mbone. However, she notes that they achieved whatever it is they had set out to achieve. Sports Director, Dale Scully, commended the students for the turn up and encouraged them to take their participation to another level and not just competing in UCU. He also noted that he had witnessed a lot of promising talent among the students. |
