Academics at Uganda Christian University

Uganda Christian University offers a number of degree and diploma programmes which are designed to develop a cadre of professionals with integrity, power of critical inquiry, logical thought and independent judgment with a christian perspective. The programmes are offered in three intakes: September, January and May.

Career Planning and Placement

Susan Hakiza speaks to high school students at an education fairThis office connects UCU students and alumni to the work world.  Career Planning and Placement advises students about careers and equips them to succeed in job searches. This office helps refer students for internships or employment. Susan K. Hakiza (Mrs) heads this office and works with other departments to serve the students.

CP&P communicates with employers about UCU and its graduates and brings them to the campus to meet students. 

 

What is the Career Office about?

The Career Planning and Placement  Function serves to provide services and support to current students and alumni through internships, career guidance as well as identifying career opportunities for graduates of UCU through networking with employers. We do this hand in hand with the Alumni office, the Academic office as well as the different faculties to help students prepare for life after University.

Purpose

To improve the success of students and alumni of Uganda Christian University in finding relevant experience and placement in the job market as well as exhibiting excellence in their chosen careers, and developing their self-esteem.

What we do

1. Helps students plan for a career

  • Coordinate with the Career guidance and counselling office (admissions office), in conducting the first years’ orientation at the beginning of each academic year and providing career guidance to students including career difficulties.
  • Conducting pre-employment seminars, workshops, corporate company exhibitions on campus about what they can offer and having question and answer sessions to answer students’ queries.
  • Advising students on options related to career planning including  identifying and seeking out opportunities, being effective at interviews, participating in career fairs and other career related events, creating effective correspondences both written and electronic, selecting between offers and transitioning from students to professionals.
  • Work with faculties to help students find internships 

2.    Availing information about specific job openings to students, finalists, and alumni.

  • Building and updating a data bank of potential employers by organizing information about the organization, their needs, vacancies available etc, for different fields of study.
  • Create, maintain and update on a regular basis a Career development and placement website on which job adverts and company/ organisation information can be posted for students and alumni.
  • Organise career fairs, employer forums and tours, lists of openings in the job market on display boards, as well as coordinate students’ contact with other related areas within the university including the Alumni office, Student Affairs, Financial Aid, Counselling etc.

3.    Help finalists develop CVs, job finding, and interviewing skills:

  • Hold trainings to equip students for job interview preparation i.e. presentation (how to sell themselves), the right way to dress for interviews, computer and internet skills and how to be resourceful at the place of work.
  • Help students to write winning CVs that reflect personal details, qualifications, career plans, skills and achievements, education background, work history, courses and conferences, presentations, additional information, hobbies and referees.

4.    Make employers aware of UCU programmes, finalists and alumni. 

  • Create and maintain relationships with representatives of businesses, NGOs and Government through regular emails, University Newspapers, annual reports etc, to interest them with Uganda Christian University and what we can offer
  • Do a survey of employer needs and expectations and how they can be met in Uganda Christian University graduates.
  • Offering career aptitude tests to figure out what graduates are good at and vetting graduates’ CVs on campus to help companies recruit the best candidates.
  • Draw up MoUs with potential employers to receive UCU students for internships.

 

Our achievements

 

  • A career fair in 2010, the first of its kind with an attendance of eight companies, which enabled students to interact with employers.
  • Three Seminars and workshops so far, which has equipped students with job searching and job creation skills.
  • Mock interviews, career guidance and counseling that have enabled students learn to write better CVs and cover letters as well as how to handle job interviews. 
  • Creation of ongoing mutually beneficial relationships with about 15 organizations in a period of one year. 
  • Working hand in hand with the different faculties, we have been able to get about 50 students into internship positions by directly dealing with companies/ organizations.

 

In 1913, a theological college was established in Mukono. Today, Uganda Christian University serves over 11,000 students offering a wide range of programmes at its five campuses nationwide. In 2013, Uganda Christian University celebrated 100 years of service and looks forward to building a great future.
