Elizabeth Bacwayo Kukunda (PhD) is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Uganda Christian University.
Social Sciences at UCU began in 1997 by offering the program of Social Work and Social Administration as part of the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sciences.
It has since grown into a fully fledged faculty with a variety of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels and is one of the largest faculties at UCU. By November 2010, the faculty had over two thousand students ranging from Diploma to Masters Level.
We have a vision to transform lives for excellent, relevant and holistic service to society. Our mission is to provide academic, social and spiritual guidance through effective teaching, research, guidance and counselling, in order to produce high-quality social scientists of integrity, who are academically grounded, socially integrated and morally sound.
Our goal is to produce a breed of enlightened professionals and leaders who will do their work with professional dedication and integrity to address the social and economic needs of the country from a Christian perspective.
We currently have courses in Social Work and Social Administration, Development Studies, Counselling Psychology, Public Administration and Management, and Community Leadership and Development. Most of these are full time courses offered at our main campus in Mukono and Kampala.
These courses are also offered at our Constituent College at Bishop Barham University College and our campuses in Mbale and Arua. The Constituent College also has some courses that are currently not offered at the main campus and these include Environment and Disaster Management and Administrative Studies.
The current offerings at post graduate level include Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, Master of Arts in Development Studies, Master of Arts in Public Administration and Management, Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management and Post Graduate Diploma in Development Evaluation Studies.
These are long distance courses targeted at the busy practitioner who is unable to take off many months off work to upgrade his or her skills. All are run on modular basis, with modules lasting for a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 4 weeks for some. Our post graduate program are meant for small qualitative groups of practitioners holding responsible positions in public, private and non-profit organizations.
The teaching staff have academic standing in various Social Science related disciplines and have wide experience in teaching, research and community service. These are supplemented by part time teaching staff who are practitioners in various agencies in the country who enrich the academic content with their experiences in the field. Social Sciences Staff do most of the teaching, but the resources of the Faculty of Social Sciences are available to provide specialist expertise.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has two Departments:
- The Department of Social Work and Social Administration headed by Mr. Lewis Kabanda
- The Department of Development Studies headed by Mrs. Joy Asiimwe Turyamwijuka.
