Master of Public Health Leadership (Save The Mothers)

Format: Modular (3 weeks 3x per year for 2 years)
Locations: Mukono Campus

The program targets a variety of professionals in health, policy, journalism, education, business and other professions, who share a passion for improving maternal health.

The aim is to train a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who will understand the complex issues around safe motherhood. And that they will become competent leaders to initiate substantial change through a multitude of specializations, professional skills and influence.

After completion of the program, we believe the graduate should have the following qualities:

Character
Dedicated person who is a committed life-long learner.  Works well in teams as well as individually.  Is willing to challenge the norms to bring change and benefit for vulnerable people.

Ability
Leadership capacity to implement strategies which will lead to sustainable and significant change in maternal/child health

Knowledge
Public health with a focus on maternal and child health

Advocacy in order to improve mother and child health

Behaviour
Promoting positive attitude towards health and well being of women and children

Entry Requirement

  • UCU requirements for post graduate programs.
  • Submit a CV with full contact information to Department of Health Sciences and Registrar’s office.  Include a brief letter (750 words max) describing why the candidate would like to be enrolled in the program.
  • Complete a confidential personal interview with two Save the Mothers program leaders.  (Candidates will be invited by the program for an interview. Not all applicants will receive an interview).
  • 2 character references with contact information supplied to the Department of Health Sciences

Research Requirements
All students are required to complete a research or project for presentation as a dissertation at the end of the program.  The topic of the dissertation must be related to maternal/child health.

This is a significant part of the student’s academic experience in the program and he/she will be aided through an assigned supervisor.  Access to educational and research tools will be made available to the student in order to assist them in their work.

Internship/Experiential Learning
Each module consists of at least two field trips which include opportunities to interact with communities around issues of maternal health, observing clinical settings where maternal health is being provided and having the chance to participate in behavioral change initiatives in rural communities around Mukono. Students are also encouraged to participate in safe motherhood initiatives within their own place of work/influence.

Course Structure
This two year modular program involves 18 weeks of in-class training with three modules per year over two years.  Each module is three weeks in duration.  In between modules, students will be assigned supplementary readings and will be expected to create, implement and evaluate a major project or carry out a research project. 

The program consists of small and large group sessions with an emphasis on problem-based learning and group activity.  Included in the course work are field visits, participation in a mentorship program, written assignments and an oral class presentation.
